Jamdani

(India)

India, the birthplace of cotton, has long been an exporter of cotton products. From the excavated article of the remains, Indian cotton was exported not only to Europe but also to Persia and Egypt.

Expectedly, it was brought to Japan by the East India Company.

“Jamdani” introduced here is a fine cotton fabric that weaves an extremely thin cotton yarns, also known as "Floral Muslin", with the local techniques of the West Bengal and the techniques brought from Persia.

The light and thin Jamdani weave is suitable for clothes in this hot region and is mainly finished as a Saris, and it is also used as a stole to wear with Saris and Kurtas.

Jamdani Weaving was declared an Intangible Cultural Property by UNESCO in 2013.
